5 Hidden Romantic Spots in Nevis

June 18, 2018

Nevis, the sister island of St Kitts is located just a 45-minute ferry ride from Basseterre, the capital city. It has the hidden romantic spots where you can fall asleep to the sound of waves.

Nevis evokes feelings of nostalgia, where old sugar mills, boiling houses, and chattel houses are preserved and converted into unique West Indian architectural designed resorts. There’s something cozily old-fashioned and secluded about Nevis. Whether you’re looking for a place in the mountains or set on the beach, we’ve got five for you to choose from:

1. Nisbet Plantation Beach Club

Recognized as one of the top ten most romantic Caribbean resorts, Nisbet Plantation Beach Resort was a plantation and ancestry home of Fanny Nisbet. She was the wife of Admiral Horatio Nelson, a British naval commander and national hero, who brought England to victory against the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

The Great House, built in 1778 is now a restaurant on-site. Nisbet Plantation Beach Club offers an outdoor pool with views of the Caribbean Sea, a spa, three restaurants and 36 rooms spread across 36 acres of lush greenery and a private beach. It’s the Caribbean’s only historic plantation inn by the beach.

2. The Hermitage

For an authentic and romantic Nevis experience, you must stay at The Hermitage. This plantation inn has the oldest wooden house in the Caribbean. The Great House, now a restaurant was built between 1670 and 1740.

Set 800 feet above the sea, The Hermitage’s original owners were the Pembertons from England. Indigo, tobacco, cotton, spices and sugar canes were planted in their 100-acre farm. Now, The Hermitage is a small family run inn providing accommodation in restored chattel houses and new cottages for up to 35 guests. It has a village feel, with a restaurant, a swimming pool, a garden and a tennis court on-site. You won’t be by the beach, but you’d experience the authentic West Indian hospitality.

3. Montpelier Plantation and Beach

Located on the foothills of Nevis Peak (the highest peak in Nevis) and 750 feet above the Caribbean Sea, Montpelier Plantation and Beach resort offers absolute seclusion and luxury. It was an 18-century sugar plantation, surrounded by 60 acres of tropical gardens. There are three villas and 19 rooms at the property. The resort offers commanding views of the mountains and the sea. A free shuttle service is available to take guests to their private beach, which is only six miles away.

Montpelier prides themselves in providing a top-notch dining experience in Nevis. Restaurant 750 is stylish with inside and outside dining areas. If you choose al fresco dining, you’ll get views of Charlestown and St Kitts. The exclusive The Mill Restaurant, a converted 300-year-old sugar mill is available only if you book in advance. For a casual dining experience, there is a poolside restaurant.
