7 Best Places for Fish and Chips in Auckland New Zealand

Where are the best places to eat fish and chips in Auckland now? That was the question we’ve been asking since the iconic Fish Pot Cafe in Auckland’s Mission Bay closed its doors just over a year ago.

Greasy fish and chips is the most popular take-out food in New Zealand. You’ll find at least one fish and chips shop in every strip mall. Some fancy restaurants are kicking it up a notch by offering a more elaborate presentation of this famous New Zealand dish.

According to Seafood New Zealand:
Fish ‘n’ chips have moved far beyond the traditional “shark and taties,” commonly known as “greasies,” wrapped up in newsprint. A new wave of shops has gone upmarket, offering a wide variety of fish species cooked to order, often attractively served in boxes with condiments such as lemon wedges.

Finding the best in Auckland is no easy task, but here are seven:

1. Mt Eden Village Fish Shop

Opened since 1939, the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop is one of the oldest fish and chips shop in Auckland. Located on 438 Mt Eden Road in Mt Eden Village, it takes around a 20-minute walk from Mount Eden Summit to the fish shop.

Combine a tour of Mount Eden Summit with a lunch stop at Mt Eden Village Fish Shop. Mount Eden is an extinct volcano located about three miles south of Auckland city center. You get panoramic views of Auckland and the surrounding suburbs from the top (650 feet). It’s also one of the best places to enjoy the sunset in Auckland.

A lunch special of fish and chips at Mt Eden Village Fish Shop is just NZ$7. For an additional price, you can also ask for kumara chips (sweet potato fries) instead of regular chips (potato fries).

2. The Fish & Chip Shop

The Fish & Chip Shop has three locations – Sandringham, Westmere, and Epsom. Don’t go to any of these shops on Monday because that’s the only day the shops are closed.

Besides the regular deep-fried fish, The Fish & Chip Shop offers pan-fried options for those who prefer the lighter version. And gluten-free option as well. On the menu are snapper, tarakihi, and gurnard fish. Try their kumara chips with aioli sauce with fresh gurnard.

3. Sea Cow on the Bay

Located at Auckland’s Mission Bay, a few feet from the permanently closed iconic Fish Pot Cafe is Sea Cow on the Bay. The best alternative now for piping hot fish and chips is here at Sea Cow on the Bay. Grab a chair and enjoy a meal at the shop with views of the bay or join the locals and have a picnic.

We recommend getting the battered blue cod fish with the special Seacow tartare sauce. Mission Bay is a favorite picnic spot for locals and tourists.

4. Fishsmith

In Auckland’s affluent neighborhood of Herne Bay, you can either dine in or take out delicious fish and chips and fish tacos too at Fishsmith. The modest eatery takes pride in their presentation of New Zealand’s favorite take-out food. Their chips (fries) are paper-wrapped, and the fish is served in brown boxes.

5. The Brewers Co-operative

If you like craft beer with fish and chips, you’re going to love The Brewers Co-operative. Located in downtown Auckland’s Victoria Street West, close to Sky Tower, this bar has a laid-back atmosphere and an excellent bar food menu, including fish and chips of course.

It’s an ideal place to chill and dine in downtown.

6. Riba Fish and Chips

Take a 12-minute ferry ride from downtown to Davenport, a historic seaside village in Auckland. The village has cozy cafes, beaches, and art galleries. It’s also home to Mount Victoria, another vantage point to enjoy the scenic views of Auckland.

Have your fish and chips at Riba Fish and Chips on Victoria Road before heading back to downtown Auckland.

7. Fish and Ships

Housed in a pop-up ship container, Fish and Ships claims to have the freshest fish straight off the boat. Situated on Viaduct Walkway, across from the Maritime Museum, enjoy your fish and chips and take a seat beside Fish and Ships or take a short walk to the steps and enjoy the view of Viaduct harbor.

It’s one of the newest fish and chips shops in Auckland.
