5 Top Honeymoon Road Trips to Consider

Whether your honeymoon is right after your wedding day or a few months later, a honeymoon road trip is worth considering if you like getaways with no schedules to keep up with and you prefer exploring places on your own.

Here are 5 top honeymoon road trips structured around a seven-day trip. You can extend or shorten your tour to suit your needs and budget.

1. Florida Keys – Key Largo to Key West

When you drive from Key Largo to Key West, you are driving through a chain of islands connected by bridges with the ocean on both sides. If you need to fly from another state to get to Key Largo, the closest airport is Miami International Airport.

Start your journey at Key Largo and book your stay at a guest house in Islamorada. Islamorada is 17 miles south of Key Largo. You have the options of diving or snorkeling in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, dining and wining in Islamorada’s seaside restaurants and bars.

After a day or two in Islamorada, head south to Marathon and visit the Dolphin Research Center. Swim and play with the dolphins in this not-for-profit facility. After a fun day at the center, continue south on the Overseas Highway to Key West.

While in Key West stroll along Duval Street, visit Hemingway Home, go paddle boating and spend your day at the beach.

2. Coastal Maine

Rugged coasts, over 60 lighthouses and historic towns are some of the unique attractions that greet you on Maine’s Route 1. Commence in Portland, and head north to Kennebunkport. This beach town is home to beautiful beaches, and it has the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

After two or three nights in Kennebunkport, continue north to Rockland-Camden, Maine’s cultural center for the best foods and shopping. The top attraction here is Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. Next stop is Bar Harbor. Prepare to stay a few nights in Bar Harbor so you’ll have enough time to explore Acadia National Park.

3. Phoenix to Grand Canyon, Arizona

Couples who love nature and prefer long drives will enjoy a road trip from Phoenix to Grand Canyon. This road trip is over 500 miles, round trip.

Begin your journey at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Make Phoenix your home base for a night or two while you explore Montezuma Castle National Monument and the sprawling city in the Sonoran Desert. The next stop is Sedona, the gateway to Red Rock State Park and Slide Rock State Park. Spend a few days relaxing in Sedona and scaling the world famous red rocks.

The drive from Sedona to Grand Canyon National Park is about two hours 12 minutes. Stay at a hotel in Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) while you visit one of the most spectacular natural wonders in America.

Make time for the 25-mile scenic desert view drive. For additional information, read Things to Do in Grand Canyon by NPS.gov.

4. Asheville Scenic Drives

Asheville, NC is an ideal honeymoon destination for couples who love cozy accommodations in a small town with easy access to the mountains, rivers, and waterfalls.

Stay in Asheville and explore the area at your own pace. We recommend taking these four scenic drives as listed by Explore Asheville:

1. Asheville through Maggie Valley to Cherokee to visit an antique car museum and Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and enjoy views of the mountains.
2. Asheville to Hot Springs for an outdoor adventure and soak in the mineral baths.
3. Asheville to Elk Mountain Scenic Drive.
4. Asheville to Black Mountain Rag to Chimney Rock.

5. North Hilo and Hamakua Coast, Hawaii Island

You don’t need to drive hundreds of miles to get from place to place in Hawaii. The Big Island (Hawaii Island) provides a selection of winding coastal drives, breathtaking views, fascinating stops and many places to eat.

We suggest flying into Hilo International Airport or Kona International Airport. Pick the airport that has the most direct flight from your hometown. Find a hotel that suits your budget in Hilo, Kona or Kohala Coast.

Either take the road trip from Hilo to Waipi’o Valley Lookout, a 49-mile journey in one day or spread it out over several days.

Waterfalls, tropical rainforests, green valleys, scenic overlooks, small towns and small farms are typical scenes along this stretch of this scenic drive on the northeastern side of the Big Island.
