5 Perfect Winter Escapes in the Caribbean

Did you feel the blast of cold air this morning? Winter means the arctic chill may once again plunge the northern part of the United States and all of Canada into a deep freeze.

Before you beg for spring’s arrival or catch a case of the winter blues, consider one of these five perfect winter escapes in the Caribbean:

1. Rio Bueno Jamaica

Rio Bueno is 32 miles from Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ). A quick 45-minute drive away. According to VisitJamaica.com, Columbus dropped anchor first on his first visit to Jamaica at Rio Bueno Harbour. This historic seaside village housed taverns, guesthouses, and inns when the British were there but suffered neglect from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s.

It was an area that attracted painters, poets, and musicians including Alex Haley, James Morrison and Jamaica’s renowned sculptor Joe James.

The best place to unwind and enjoy sunny Jamaica at Rio Bueno is at Melia Braco Village. This colonial-style resort has a private beach, English gardens, two swimming pools overlooking the sea, four bars, six restaurants, and a spa and wellness center. It's the perfect setting to enjoy the variety of Caribbean cocktails and Jamaican or international foods.

2. Limon Costa Rica

Limon, a city on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, about a 39-minute flight from San Jose. It is for anyone looking to be close to the untouched rainforest and still able to enjoy the Caribbean sea. Besides water activities, Limon offers plenty of outdoor adventures like hiking, horseback riding, zip lining, water rappelling, and tree climbing.

One place to relax and discover the rainforest around Limon is at Selva Bananito Ecolodge. It’s ideally located at the upper Bananito River and foothill of the Cerro Mochila, about a three and a half hour drive from San Jose.

Some of the things to look forward to at Selva Bananito Lodge are siesta on one of the hammocks, sumptuous meals, spectacular views, and rooms with mosquito net, wooden decor, and, views.

3. St James, Barbados

St James Parish in Barbados is home to pristine beaches, calm waters, and the fashionable Holetown. It is also known as the Platinum Coast and is suitable for anyone looking for a white sandy beach to sunbathe and dip in the warm waters of the Caribbean sea.

There are many luxurious resorts in St James Parish. We recommend Fairmont Royal Pavilion. This 75-room beachfront property has only ocean view rooms. The resort has a freshwater pool, tennis courts, beachfront restaurants, fitness center, and tropical gardens. It is eight miles from Holetown, a historic center offering an array of world-class shopping and dining options.

4. Cartagena, Colombia

It takes only four hours 41 minutes flying time from New York to Cartagena. Cartagena is a major city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The city’s main attraction is the Old City, named a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1984. Inside this walled Old City are treasures from the past - narrow cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, churches, monasteries, and overhanging Spanish balconies filled with colorful bougainvillea.

Besides a destination for history buffs, Cartagena is also a beach resort destination. Deep sea fishing, jet-skiing, scuba diving, and boating are some of the water adventures available in Cartagena. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, shops, and museums located within the old cities and also at the beach front properties.
