Florianopolis: A Family Vacation Destination in Brazil

If you have a family of adventure seekers and beachgoers, consider a family vacation to a destination like Florianopolis Brazil. Florianopolis is located 432 miles from Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil.

Flight time from Sao Paulo is one hour 7 minutes. The closest airport is Florianopolis –Hercilio Luz International Airport.

There are 42 beaches in Florianopolis Brazil. Not only does this destination offer fishing, surfing, trekking, sand boarding, kayaking, paragliding and more, it’s also a family-friendly destination.

Here are 10 things you can do with your family in Florianopolis:

One: Trekking
Go trekking with a local tour guide from Matadeiro or Pantano do Sul to Lagoinha do Leste also known as the ‘secret beach’. Our recommendation is to trek from Matadeiro to Lagoinha do Leste and continue on the trail from the beach to the other side of the mountain to Pantano do Sul. Your total trekking time is five hours depending on your fitness level.

This trekking tour is medium to hard levels. It is not for those who are not fit. You will need proper trekking shoes, insect repellant during warmer weather and lots of water and snacks.

Two: Sandboarding
Sandboarding is popular in Florianopolis. You can either sandboard at Joaquina beach or Ingleses beach in the island. Sandboards are available for rent at the beach.

Three: Surfing
The water and wind conditions in Florianopolis are extremely good for surfing. Florianopolis is suitable for surfing year round and Praia Mole, Barra da Lagoa, Ingleses are some of the best places for surfing. If you are a beginner surfer, Barra da Lagoa would be the best place to try out surfing in Florianopolis.

Four: Paragliding
Take a 15-minute paragliding tour with an experienced pilot and fly over beautiful sceneries of Florianopolis. You do not need experience for paragliding. Bring warm clothing and your camera and take pictures while you are ‘flying’. You can take paragliding tours at Lagoa da Conceicao, Praia Brava, Praia Mole or Rio Vermelho.

Five: Full day tour to Blumenau
Take a full day to Blumenau, a town founded by German immigrants. Your drive from Florianopolis to Bluemenau is one hour 37 minutes.

Blumenau is filled with German influence. If you like a combination of adventure, food and culture, don’t miss Blumenau. Your tour will include a visit to sausage street, Sao Paulo Apostolo Cathedral, Dr. Hermann Bruno Otto’s mausoleum, Carlos Gomes Theatre, Fritz Muller House, which has the largest insect collection in the world and more.

Experience lunch in one of the local restaurants serving sausages and beer.

Six: Kayaking
Go kayaking at Lagoa do Peri at the southern region of Florianopolis. This kayaking trip will bring you through clear water, Atlantic rainforest, rocks and the natural flora and fauna of Florianopolis. Watch various types of birds and butterflies flying pass as you kayak.

Seven: Sun bathing
Do nothing, just relax and enjoy the sun and sand in any of the beaches in Florianopolis. For example at Joaquina beach there are a few seaside cafés and restaurants where you could hang out for a meal or a drink while you spend the day at the beach swimming, reading and relaxing.

Eight: Floripa by bus
Take a tour on a double decker bus and visit beaches like Joaquina, Mole, Barra da Lagoa, Ingleses, Jurere, Lagoa da Conceicao, Santo Antonio de Lisboa and Cacupe and more. Tours are not available daily. Check with Floripa by Bus for more information. This is a great way to have an overview of the north and east side of the island.

Nine: Fishing
If you like fishing, head over to the village of Ribeirao da Iiha for a fishing tour. This region cultivates the most oysters in Brazil. The Azorean houses, church and authentic Azorean cuisine is worth a visit after your fishing trip.

Ten: Municipal Market
The Municipal Market is located in downtown Florianopolis. It is the place to try out seafood, buy souvenirs, visit the fresh fish market and listen to some live music on the weekends.

There are over 120 stalls in the market, which are known as boxes. Among the boxes, the most popular is Box 32, the place to eat oysters and shrimps.

Florianopolis, also known as Floripa, is getting a lot of attention from international travelers. This southern city in Brazil is where rich Brazilians are buying their second home or beach homes. The best way to explore Florianopolis is with a local guide.
