5 Fun Things to Do in Maui

What’s a dream vacation to you? If it is blue skies, sunshine, great food, lots of outdoor activities, rolling hills and big ocean waves…look no further. Maui awaits you.

Maui offers beautiful waterfalls, beaches, romantic sunsets, natural wonders like Haleakala National Park and quaint small towns around the island. Maui is divided into Central Maui, West Maui, South Maui, Upcountry Maui and East Maui.

The Kahului Airport is in Central Maui and it’s also where the island’s business community and local government is located.  Visitors get around in Maui by rental cars, taxi, shuttle, private tours or motorcycle.

If you are heading to West Maui you could choose between the many forms of transportation to take you to Kaanapali, Kapalua or Lahaina. It is about 28 miles from Kahului Airport (OGG) to the beach town of Kaanapali. The trip is about 46 minutes. It takes 58 minutes to drive from the airport to Kapalua and 41 minutes to Lahaina.

Here you will find the whaling town, art galleries, shops, restaurants, museums, luxurious resorts, golf courses, pineapple farms, white sand beaches and rainforest preserve.

To the South, you will be at the sun-lovers paradise beaches, with communities like Wailea, Maalaea and Makena.  There are spectacular oceanfront resorts and beaches, shopping village, golf courses, gourmet dining, luxurious spas, tropical fish and natural wonders.

Haleakala National Park in Upcountry Maui will take you to a contrasting sight away from the oceanfront and beaches.

Whether you are looking for moonlight strolls, surfing, whale watching, private candle light dinners or relaxing under swaying palms and glittering white sandy beaches, Maui has it all.

Here are 5 fun things to do in Maui:

Whale Watching:
The best time to watch humpbacks whales in Maui is between January through mid-March. Of course the best place is at Lahaina, the whaling town in West Maui. Take a whale-watch boat and within 15 minutes from the shores you are up close to the amazing creatures of the sea.

Parasailing:
Get a breathtaking birds eye view of Maui’s coastlines, skyline and natural wonders while parasailing. Parasailing is gliding through the air wearing an open parachute while being towed by a motorboat. According to West Maui Parasail they offer 2 flights. You have a choice of going up to 38 stories or 50 stories high.

Luau and Hula Experiences:
Your vacation to Maui is not complete without a traditional Hawaiian feast and entertainment called Luau and Hula. Most hotels have their luau night for guests, which is a buffet style dinner usually with local dishes, the Kalua pork, fish, fried rice and even mac and cheese and potatoes. It is followed by entertainment by local dancers and singers.

Hula is a traditional Hawaiian dance, which is accompanied by chants or songs.

Maui is one of the most culturally diverse places in the US. Other than the multi-cultural cuisine, music, arts and crafts, visitors should book a Luau experience and Hula experience while on vacation.

Pineapple Tours:
Pineapple is quite synonymous to Maui. Pineapple plantations have been around in Maui for over 100 years. Guests today can take a Maui Pineapple Tour in the historic plantation town of Hali’imaile. This is the only place in United States that offers a tour of a working pineapple plantation.

Surfing:
Maui provides one of the best surfing for an avid surfer and also a great place to learn how to surf. The Lahaina Harbor has one of the best places for beginners with experienced surf instructors. If you have been dreaming about taking up surfing one day, this could be your chance of a lifetime.

Goofy Foot Surf offers group or private lessons and beginner or master surfing lessons for the whole family.

As you might expect, the island has more than just five fun activities. But to some of us, it may just be a place to get away from it all and do practically nothing…just relax under the big blue sky or moonlit nights at the beach.
